I used an 8V engine to get a land speed record at Bonneville, so they are sturdy. But, there are so many vacuum lines, etc etc that we threw away, I have no idea what it would be like to try to keep one running for the street in stock condition. So, I'm not really much help, but if you aren't afraid of rust, then by all means go for it.

I'd pull the fuel pump and take a look to see if the rubber looks like it's melted, if not, then you may have dodged the bullet.

And, in that process, you might make sure it's the right pump for CIS -- the pump I took out of the 82 I bought was a non CIS pump which partially explained why it ran poorly. Or the incorrect fuel distributor, or non functioning warm up regulator or the clogged check valves, or the ........24 other things. In the end, I got three good parts out of that 82 for the race car, it wasn't the greatest pick I've ever had. OH, got a good exhaust manifold too -- make sure that isn't cracked before you buy it. Getting another one will be "interesting".......one that isn't cracked that is.

Most all the chassis I found for the early 8 valves had 16 valve transplants. That was popular at the time apparently, so if you really like the body, there are options.

The other think to make note of is the chain guides, timing stuff. Hard to find the parts, and if you can take off the valve cover to look down at the chain guides, try to see if the brittle pieces have broken off and fallen down into the sump. No way to fish those out, you'll be taking the engine out and then the next thing you know, it's hundred parts splattered all over everywhere. Broken and worn parts. That you don't want to put back in the car.

Good luck with the project!
