Regarding the 3 screws securing the slave, I've replaced them with hardened hex bolts which makes things easier since you can get a wrench on them without compressing the bellows until they are almost out.
Instead of the special tool, I've used 12 gauge insulated wire. you can use a large screwdriver or small prybar to depress the fingers and work in the wire. You'll need to do this at 3 or 4 points and will have to rotate the flywheel to get at them all.
Sounds like you have some clutch though. If that's the case, it's easier to have a helper pump the clutch up while you insert the wire.
Also, 3 zip ties through the 3 screw holes compressing the slave into the pressure plate makes reassembly A LOT easier.
Lastly, ONCE and only once, I was able to do the slave without removing the pressure plate, usually not however.
