Sorry, Boris, but I don't have a Bentley -- perhaps someone can help us out with this one.
The actuator rod I'm talking about is the piece that sticks out of the diaphram unit, into the distributor. You can't see it unless you take the diaphram unit off. (And I wouldn't do that, unless it's broken and you're replacing it!) Otherwise, it's not visible.
To remove the diaphram unit, clean off the outside of the distributor and you'll see it's held on by two little screws. Remove those screws, and then the diaphram unit is only being held on to a pin inside by that actuator arm. Gently wiggling it sideways (toward the engine) will free the actuator from the pin, and then you have the diaphram unit in your hand. Again, unless it's broken, I don't recommend you take it off.
With the distributor cap off (and you might also have a thin metallic shield plate below the cap to remove) you should see a little black plastic gizmo right at the inner top edge of the distributor. It's part of the Hall Sensor timing pickup equipment -- what we have instead of old-fashioned ignition points. If you wish to see it move WITHOUT removing that diaphram assembly, you can just take off the distributor cap and apply suction and/or pressure to the diaphram unit, and the moving piece you see inside the distributor is what I'm talking about. That's the reluctor pickup... I don't know what else it might be called.
Hope this helps, Boris. Are you having timing troubles?
