I think it's an appropriate subject to discuss here because there has been so much discussion here about the pros and cons of Bar's Leaks. It was raging before I started visiting which must be three, four years ago, now?
You're right, Zeke, that Bar's Leaks and the use thereof is a general car topic, so therefore a general Saab topic. However, the discussion here has been fuelled by the recommendation for using Bar's Leaks in 9000s, primarily for the heater core problem that so many people report.
While so much opinion and counter-opinion has been thrown around in all that time, no conclusion has been reached, with people like Bob fervently advocating the use of BL and people like me throwing up my hands in horror and saying "where's the evidence?".
Until now, fact and hearsay were indistinguishable. Now I believe we know what is hard fact and what is anecdotal (or perhaps was once fact, but may now be outdated). I hope the results so far of our investigation will be of use to people faced with the dilemma of whether to use BL or not, and I also hope that further information will come to light if Clayton Parks is reading this thread.
While I personally don't subscribe to Bob's choice, I can now understand where he's coming from. I'm happy that he has some facts to back up that choice and that the questions he can't find answers to, I can't find the answers to either. In short, we're both making our own decisions based on all the evidence we have available as a group. I hope Bob understands my point of view too, and that it is also backed up by the same facts. The bizarre thing is that through this investigation, we may have turned up enough material to fuel a long (and probably fruitless) argument between us, should we be so inclined. I certainly don't feel that inclination.
I hope that in the future we'll see much more informed and useful (and less heated) answers to enquiries about the use of Bar's Leaks in the 9000. Certainly when responding to these enquiries myself, I'll be very careful to separate fact from opinion, now that I know which is which.
In the final analysis, I don't imagine Bob will ever stop using Bar's Leaks in his 9000s. There's a good chance that I will never start using it. Those are equally valid choices, given the known facts. Perhaps it's just that I enjoy lying under cars while Bob prefers to drive them :)
Maybe once we've sorted out the issue in the context of the 9000, we can pass on our findings to the General BB so other Saab owners can benefit from it. For my part, I feel a web page coming on (one of so many in the works, after I redesign my site).
And I have to thank Bob for allowing me to assist in what has turned out to be a very interesting investigation. I think he's starting to understand how an engineer is trained to approach a problem :)
