"Yes they are good, but driver skill being equal, and overconfidence not being a factor, 4 wheel drive is better." Well, how many young adults do you know that aren't overconfident, especially when it comes to driving? I'm not saying there aren't young adults who aren't good drivers, but I do have a very strong intuitive sense that they're the exception, not the rule. And, 4WD may be better if he's always driving on dirt roads with deep snow. If he's commuting between school and home on interstate highways, then I'd go with any Saab. 4WD is not AWD and can be dangerous if used at highway speeds. Also, it definitely gives less experienced drivers a false sense of security - I can't tell you how many idiots I've seen in SUV's who think that 4WD means you can speed/tailgate on icy highways. Lastly, I'll take my chances of surviving a crash in a Saab over any pick-up truck, anytime, anyday, anywhere! I'm not sure how the 9-2 compares with real Saabs, in terms of crash-worthiness, but I'm certain it would be better than a truck. With AWD, it probably handles better on snow/icy highways, too. I think Mike's arguments with Saab being expensive to repair/maintain only holds when buying used and doesn't apply in the case of a new 9-2.
