When I was in Denver, there was an article in the local paper which explained that octane 'regular' in the mountains was 84 or 85. Something to do with the altitude affecting ignition. I was having a hard time putting that low an octane in my car!
Previous posts a few years ago explained that there is actually more energy in a lower octane fuel. The higher octanes delay ignition by being less flammable, and if I remember correctly, the flammability is due to fewer carbons in the fuel, thus less fuel per gallon.
I'm hoping that a chemical/engineering type can explain the altitude and octane relationship better. I'd also like to know why the altitude affects mileage so much. I did not really get it from the Post article.
