...this was meant to be just a quick and dirty HG replacement to get a car that had been sitting for four years back on the road, drive it a while, and see if anything starts to fall apart... it's looking good so I will probably pull the head again and do it properly (and replace the timing chain...) once I'm done restoring my '85 SPG.
I still think I would pull the head with the manifolds attached, then take them off on the bench. The intake manifold bolts in particular look a bit tough to get to, probably easier not in the engine bay.
I literally just made a quick and dirty serpentine belt tensioner compression tool, looked at everything which was attached to the head/manifolds, unbolted/disconnected/bagged/labeled, pulled the valve cover, set to TDC (with marks on cam bearings lining up), pulled the cam sprockets (actually I had to pull the exhaust cam as the cam sprocket bolt was completely siezed...), pulled the head (don't forget the two bolts which go up from the timing cover into the head... accessible through the fender liner) and pulled the head. Did a quick and dirty clean up of the mating surfaces and pistons/combustion chambers, and threw everything back together, being extra careful to get all the timing marks to line up, doing a few full rotations of the engine with a big socket wrench on the crank pulley bolt. The car has been just driving better and better as it gets miles on it.
