Anyone cure touchy alarm system? How?
Posted by RayF (more from RayF) on Tue, 8 Feb 2011 15:17:45

My '96 has suddenly started sounding its antitheft alarm, often early in morning when car starts to warm up as sun is rising.

It never did this last winter or the year before.

I don't want to leave it unlocked, but I'm getting tired of running outside barefoot and barely dressed to shut it off.

It seems as if one of the sensors must be the cause; what does it use as sensors, the door-jamb buttons or the latch reed switches? On the hatch, what does it use?

Does it also use the underhood rubber-booted switch on the latch apron? It seems as if this must be there for the alarm system. I think it's the same as the door switches and I think I have a spare somewhere from a junkyard visit.

It might be corroded and touchy so I think I'll try replacing that and checking the wires below.

Maybe I'll also look back at the hatch area to see what the sensor could be there.

I don't think my problem is the glass-breakage sensor.

I read on here to pull Fuse 16 but that's the door locks etc. It did seem to disable the alarm horn; I returned to the unlocked car to find no noise but emergency flashers flashing fast and car refusing to crank, till I put key in driver door and "unlocked" it.

Y'know, Saab's official owner's manual is a p--- - poor thing, no help at all on this and amazingly inarticulate or silent on many many points of detail about the cars. Anyone know if the Swedish version is more helpful?

Maybe the problem is a cold-solder-joint thing on the control module's board, as seems to be the case with so many of these cars' old-age electrical problems, but I don't really want to mess it up to test my theory.
