I know many people swear they get 30 mpg, and maybe they do on the highway, but with 200 (or more) horses and a big fat turbocharger, you're capable of burning a lot of fuel with these here beasts.
I've pretty much averaged 22-24 mpg combined, depending whether turbo or not, over the years. I probably do 50/50 city and highway, use midgrade fuel, and don't drive very hard.
For some perspective, in 2009 the Cash for Clunkers program allowed people to receive a guaranteed $4k (as I recall) on any qualifying "gas guzzler" traded in on a qualifying "fuel efficient" vehicle. To qualify as a gas guzzler, a car had to get a combined MPG of 18 or less on the then-revised EPA fuel economy ratings. A couple model years of CSE turbos were on that list.
Those revised EPA numbers are closer to reality than those used when the car was new, but the data is still based on how the car performed when new.
So the moral is, these cars' fuel efficiency reputation is overstressed and somewhat of a myth. You are doing pretty much as expected.
And don't worry. I didn't euthanize any Saabs to get my TDI. I sacrificed my horridly thirsty, 200K-mile, V8 BMW.
