Stainless is weaker, but still probably strong enough for this application. I'd trust a stainless stud much more that a 10 year old, rusted steel stud, the latter of which is almost certainly doomed to cracking at some point. I've had aftermarket stainless studs and nuts on my 9000 for several years now, still going strong. The more likely reason they didn't use stainless as OEM was because of cost.
