I've always liked a quiet car and absolutely don't like intentionally loud ones. Also, I question what savings if any are here. Yeah, a mid muffler might rust out. but so will the custom pipe Sam had made. IF he'd had the guy make up a couple, the cost might have been lower per each and he'd have them around to pull out at replacement time. But he'd still have the cost of getting the ends custom welded onto the backups.
I got a quote on that section from eEuro two weeks ago and as I recall it was like $180 plus, maybe just under $190. Shipped free, tho slow. As exhaust work goes, if studs and nuts are running free it's a dream to change compared to jobs on other cars I've owned. So, nearly $100 less than Sam spent.
On the side of those who notice no change when they eliminate mid mufflers, I offer that, on two of my cars, the entire thing was so totally rotten it was separated into pieces, all hanging by their own hooks, and I didn't even think I had any holes in the exhaust. On one, the rear muffler too was broken apart where pipe entered it, as well as full of holes. Car sounded pretty quiet until it broke apart enough that the pipes weren't butted up against the holes in the mufflers.
I like Sam's posts, he's a great mechanic and an asset to all of us on here, I just think on this he's not doing what I would do. Unless I had my own custom tubing bender and could do good wire welding.
