Just want thank you all for your input. As someone pointed out, diagnosis from a distance is an inexact science. Luckily the guys at the shop where the car is are pretty good. You had some good ideas that I passed along to the mechanic.
They have driven the car again today, and are still unable to replicate the higher temp indication. Looks like my daughter will have to keep an eye on the gauge and shut the engine down if temp gets up too high again.
The mechanic did notice oil on ground under car this morning and traced it to the oil level sender on bottom of pan. They are unable to locate another sender so will instead just change the "O" ring. For $135. Sure wish I was there so I could do that sort of repair myself.
