My '91 9kT did the same thing. The problem was not the thermostat, but the low-speed fan contact at the radiator. There was a little corrosion. That connection is prone to problems. The wire comes off the thermoswitch on the radiator, then there is another connection down by the turbo inlet hose to the intercooler. From there, the wire runs to the relay in the fuse box. I would have the mechanic check the connection at the thermoswitch on the radiator and then the next connector in line.
That's assuming you have a two-speed fan relay like I do on my '91.
BTW, your daughter is right - her car is cool.
I'm having my son, who is 19, drive my white '91 9kT in the summers when he's home from college (I have a 2002 Viggen for my summer car :-)). He didn't come home from the hospital in it, as I bought it when he was about 7 yrs old, but he learned to drive in it.
