Clutch pedal goes to the floor

1997 Aero, has been sitting in my driveway for nearly 2 years waiting for me to swap out the engine. Clutch was fine when parked. Finally decided to proceed with the engine swap, figured I'd check clutch function before i disassembled everything, and the clutch pedal went straight to the floor.
Checked the brake reservoir and it was slightly below max. No brake fluid on the floor, none apparent at any point from the brake reservoir all the way to the transmission bell housing, and none at the tranny engine junction. So, just for giggles and grins, i decide to bleed the the system. Top up the reservoir, apply pressure, bleed fluid and still no clutch function. But here's the weird part. I know that the clutch fluid reservoir is higher than the 2 brake chambers. There's an internal slit in the reservoir between the brake and clutch chambers that maybe goes an inch down from the top and allows fluid to travel back and forth between the chambers. Even though the brake fluid never went below the bottom of the slit, when the reservoir level was just below max, I started to get only air when i bled the system again. I was only getting fluid thru the slave bleed nipple when the reservoir was refilled almost all the way to the absolute top where the cap screws on. Didn't keep going back and forth to find out what, if anything, I was doing wrong. I mean, I've bled plenty of 9000 clutches before and I needed to get the engine out before dark. Is senility creeping up? Any thoughts?
