Saab41:
The magnet and float are made inside the tank. The sensor probe is a magnet-operated reed switch. It sticks as I said up into a made tube in the tank, from below, on which the magnet ring floats up and down.
To remove it you don't open up the coolant system at all. There's a plastic tab off the front of the coolant tank, you pry it I think upwards, and it releases from a clip-bracket on the bodywork and then the tank can be lifted up at its front edge and it comes free from another bracket down at its rear.
I lied, you do need to remove ONE hose, the tiny overflow hose from coolant tank to top of radiator. But no coolant will come out. The other hoses have enough slack: Lift tank up at front, bottom is revealed, the probe sticks straight up from below, use a screwdriver or a tackpuller or something and pry it down and it will pull straight out. Unplug its jack and either repair it or get another one and reinstall same way.
While it's out you can put the coolant tank back and hook up the overflow hose again and drive the car till you fix or replace your sensor.
