My guess is that the spring should be there. There is one on my 96, though the 88 I had didn't have one. One drawback of the spring is that you lose some feel of the clutch making it hard to tell if the hydraulics are acting up. Perhaps the spring mounting points are worn or broken? The spring is very strong so it doesn't seem like it would be the spring. If the pedal is lower than it was with the spring, the clutch pedal switch would need to be adjusted.
