Are you going to keep the car for many years hence? If so, go for it, but change the oil every 3k for several iterations, then settle in on your regular interval. Either RP or Amsoil will easily go 10k between changes once your engine is cleaned thoroughly of the sludge that has likely accumulated from 70k miles of fossil oil use.
As has been mentioned by others, oil leakage that may occur in an older engine is typically the result of the detergence and dispersant abilities of most synthetic products. In some cases, sludge and varnish can actually aid in keeping a faulty seal or gasket from leaking, or reducing a leak, but once it is cleaned away that extra barrier is gone. I would see such an occurence as information of faults that I would want corrected.
