And I have a degree in electronics!
First off, when I suggested possibly running a ground directly to the battery, I was referring only to the ground for my two head units and equalizer, not the amplifiers. Secondly, I'm well aware that you should use the same size wire for your ground and power wires.
Further, at least one of the high quality car amplifier brands we sell, specifically recommends in the manual, to use a ground cable that goes all the way to the battery, rather than simply grounding to the chassis. This of course being only for currents draws above certain levels (think it was 30 or 40 amps), but nevertheless there it is. And even if you do not run separate wires, as few people do, I have never read anywhere that says it's ok to run a smaller gauge wire for your ground cable, even if it's only a couple inches long.
All that said, I still think it may be a better idea, if I'm going to run a new ground cable, to run it to the same point I'm grounding my amplifiers at. This should have the greatest chance of eliminating noise, I believe.
