OK, I basically agree with everything that Aaron has suggested. However, I think I can simplify the response. If you want to get the best bang for your buck, get an amplified subwoofer (like a Bazooka, Kenwood or similiar). I would suggest a 10" model, since the saab is such a large car. Also install a set of bass blockers in your rear speakers (Crutchfield still has them - just ask, they are not listed in the catalog though). This should provide you with pretty good sound, both volume and quantity. The sub will have an adjustable gain control (which controls sound output - almost like a seperate volume knob), as well as an adjustable crossover, which will control the frequency the sub plays (80 to 120 Mhz? should be about the right range). If you are still getting too much bass through your other speakers, make sure you turn off your loudness switch on the headunit. This should help keep bass out of all the other speakers. This setup should satisfy most non-high end stereo listeners (no knock intended), as it will be loud, with plenty of bass.
Now, if you want a high end set up, I would suggest a 4 channel amp, with 2 channels running your front speakers, and 2 running your back, with a seperate amp dedicated to your subwoofer. The amps should have high and low level crossovers, so you can put the exact frequencies to your speakers. I would replace all the factory speakers as well. I have a 94 AERO, and am in the process of making speaker selections. I am going to use seperates up front (4" with a dome tweeter). I have not decided what to do in the rear yet. I may just go with a 6.5 in speaker, and fabricate a plate to make them fit in the rear. I already have a 10" Infinity Perfect woofer which I will have installed in a sealed box.
If you need further info, I can strongly recommend you call Crutchfield and speak to one of their advisors. Some are more knowledgeable than others, but they are always super helpful. I have been buying from them for 15 years, and have always been satisfied with their service.
Anyways, hope this helped. If you have any more questions, fire away.
