I think it's a case of the car body being designed, then the engine is fitted in the remaining space. As opposed to the gloriously easy American carsof old where the engine is built then the car is designed around it. You think 9000's are bad, try a Fiat 128. Then again, most transverse mounted engines aren't the easiest to work on. My simple fuel filter replacement took me several hours as the banjo bolts were frozen and everything around it had to be removed so I could access it. Oh, well. Hopefully the brake pads I'm installing won't take more than 4 hours.
