Switching from Regular to Synthetic is not a problem, and in some cases, recommended. The problem arises when people switch from Synthetic to Regular, something that should not be done. Synthetics have special qualities and additives that make them adhere very well to metal parts, like bearings and such, but make them completely incompatible with regular oil. It is also in their nature to displace impurities, including gunk in the engine and old conventional oil.
So where does this lead? Well, switching from conventional to synthetic means the synthetic will cleanse your engine of all the old oil and form a bond with the parts. On the other hand, switching from synthetic to regular means that the conventional oil will not be able to form the correct bond/barrier around the metal parts, resulting in a breakdown of engine protection.
Now that I've bored you to tears, most are ok to say that switching is unnecessary. Conventional oil is dependable, and many have good luck with it. If you have oil leaks or a limited budget, stay with the ole' tried and true. Personally, though, I prefer synthetic because it forms a better protective bond, resists thermal breakdown, has a much more limited change in viscosity (better for cold starts and high-rpm driving), and can improve mileage in general. It also stays fresh longer for those times when you have to drive that extra mile or two (thousand!) between oil changes.
The third option is to use additives, like Slick 50, or a synthetic blend if you are not ready to make the switch entirely. These offer a good compromise between the old and the new, and allow you to switch back to straight conventional if you desire.
