Eric,
Your boost problem may be related to the fact that your APC is doing its job properly and protecting the engine from unwanted detonation. If YOU can hear detonation (knock), you can be sure that the knock sensor is detecting the condition and limiting boost performance. If you treat your detonation symptoms, the APC should allow for optimum performance.
- Detonation can be caused by:
- Lean fuel mixture.
- advanced ignition timing while under boost.
- low fuel grade/octane
- carbon or other deposit within combustion chamber igniting air/fuel.
We find the most common detonation culprit to be the use of an incorrect spark plug. The wrong heat range will cause plug electrode temps to soar causing detonation under extreme conditions (load/boost). Use only NGK plugs BCP7EV or BCP6ES or those listed in your owner's manual.
"Performance" plug wires may also be to blame for boost fluctuation.
Good luck and regards for the holidays!
