It all depends on the car and how it has been maintained. My friend had a '76 EMS that the previous owner (who works in the parts department at the local dealer) had done a ton of work to. My friend had it for a few years and had a ton of problems. When the engine blew (after replacing the head gasket once and then the head later) he finally gave up on it and parted it out (the body was rusted badly).
On the other hand, my daily driver in the warm/non salty months is an '80 99 with well over 250K miles on it and it is good. The only problem is the high RPMs suck on the highway, especially if I try to run it at 85 to 90 mph for any length of time the oil will overheat. (the oil pressure light will come on if the car is idling after driving it hard like that). It would be good with a 5spd or maybe with the 99T primary drive gears. The '76 wouldn't have the front chain drive unless it has a later tranny.
