Blue wire goes to the thermostat contact on the front of the thermostat housing. Not uncommon for the tab to break off and leave nothing to hook the wire to. Mine has a screw coming out of it that the wire is hooked to.
Coil wiring. Negative side has two wires. Yellow is for the tach signal, and green goes to the condensor. Positive side has a black wire coming from it to the top of the resistor. On 73's there is also a black wire that comes off the top of the resistor and goes to the starter. I don't think 74's had that, as I don't recall my 74EMS having a wire come from the coil to the starter. White wire with green stripe comes off the bottom terminal of the resistor and goes to pin 86 of the master relay.
I don't think that resistor is supposed to glow red hot.
Points are new? How did you gap them? What is the dwell angle? The only true way to set those points is to hook up a dwell meter and set them at 50 degrees, plus or minus 2
