Ed, Do you have a service manual? There are a few things going on it seems. That ignition coil resistor gets very hot (not glowing) when the ignition is left on while the car isn't running.....say when your troubleshooting the car. Avoid this for long periods 'cause you will burn out that Resistor! When running, it will only get mildly warm or even cool. I'd say you've inherited a miswired situation from the previous owner, with possibly the wrong Ballast resistor. Does it have a number or make on it? Secondly, you need to check thoughout all the engine bay from the firewall forward to check all your wiring connections and grounds to eliminate confusion caused by the previous owner. The early Saabs were wired oddly. Thirdly, the points...you probably have them gapped incorrectly. I'd suggest looking up the procedure in the service manual. Also, look it up in say an old Chevy or Ford manual to get a few descriptions of the Gap/dwell process to better grasp ignition points. Just get the gap right. Dwell is to fine tune when running. Where are you located? If you were near me I'd offer some help. Perhaps another 99'er is close.
