Simple to hook up the machine. Red to + battery, black to - battery, other lead to - side of coil, leave the condensor wire hooked up.
Make note of where the points are before removing the screw. This will get you close when installing the new ones(don't crank the screw all the way tight until the dwell is set). Points generally last a long time, but have a tendency to get pitted in the middle of the contact area. That's when I usually replace them. This is also sped up if you leave the key on the run position instead of the accessory position for long periods of time(when listening to the radio or troubleshooting). If there are no points in the distributor like in Ed's case, I suppose you have to gap them first. A paper match should get you close, or use feeler gauges.
Remove the fuel pump fuse, and the cap and rotor should already be off. Set the meter on 4cyl dwell, then crank the starter. Look at the needle, and hopefully it will read between 48 and 52. 48 is best, as the points will wear and the angle will get bigger. If the angle is not in the range, you will need to loosen the screw a bit and move the points one way or the other. They are very touchy, so it doesn't take much movement to change the angle. That's why I mentioned earlier it could be frustrating at times.
Re-install pump fuse, rotor, and cap. Leave meter hooked up. If everything else is OK(fuel system) the car should start and run. Watch the meter and make sure the angle is steady at 48-52. If it wanders way out of range, that could indicate the distributor shaft is moving too much(something is worn out)
Section 3 of the service manual has some added info on dwell angle and setting it.
