Water pump woes (longish)

Ok, so I just bought a 1976 99GL. When I got it, the understanding was that the water pump had blown and there was possible head warpage. Thus I removed the head and took it to a machine shop. Tonight when I took the cover off the water pump, I was struck with worry. What if the water pump hadn't blown, and I just did all this work for nothing?
I was assuming that the gears on the pump shaft were stripped, so I turned the engine by hand, and the pump impeller seemed to turn accordingly. Then I checked the thermostat to see if it was stuck closed. I could move both discs with my fingers, so I guess it's not physically stuck.
All of this really bothered me, because I should have checked to make sure there was definitely something wrong before I tore it all apart. Is there any way to tell now if the pump will not work correctly once the car is put all back together? I think I'm just going to pull the pump to see if it's toast. What are the things that make one of these water pumps stop working? What else should I look for?
This is really bothering me, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
