What you are doing is prolonging the life of a rare automobile. Hell, I completely disassembled a 75EMS with less than 63k miles and re-built it. Not that there was anything wrong with it, but to ensure its longevity.
As far as the pump goes, there are three versions. Version one has an 8 cog gear that drives it, and can be removed with a slide hammer. Version II(impeller retained by a nut - conical fitting on shaft) and version III(impeller press fitted on shaft - the thread on the end of the shaft is only provided for dismantling purposes, no nut is required)...the two later versions must be removed and installed with the special tool and re-installed with the tool.
The two later versions used a cast iron gear(12 cog and brittle) which had a tendency to strip the teeth of the pump gear and idler shaft gear if improperly installed. If you have the tool, remove the pump and replace the bearing and seals while it is apart....and verify the gear is not stripped.
Most likely, you have version II...
