One of my 96's acts up now and again with the freewheel. Often going from reverse to 1st. I back out of a parking space, shift into first, let out the clutch and NOTHING. No go. A friend told me his 96 would do this on occasion and if you shut off the car and restart it, the problem magically disappears. Which it does. So freewheels are funny things. In my case, I think it sticks- the little springs don't push the rollers out.

Your case is a little different, with a partially engaged freewheel. If you look at a diagram, such as Fig 6.8 in the Haynes manual, you'll see that the freewheel arm moves a locking sleeve back and forth on the shaft. The locking sleeve has teeth that engage with the hub on the end of the transmission primary shaft. If the arm is moved part way, you don't get good engagement and the teeth can grind and wear right off. Hopefully, that's not the case with you.

I'd watch things very closely and drive the car easily a couple of times to see what happened. It may be okay with minor wear. If things don't work right, I'd drain the gearbox through a filter and see if you get any metal parts. If you do, it's probably time to remove the drivetrain.

I bought a '71 96 a couple of years ago and the PO told me that the freewheel was broken. The rod was removed and the freewheel lever was screwed down tight. I drove the car that way for a year, with the freewheel locked. Then last fall, I decided it was time to change the gearoil and out came a handful of freewheel rollers and springs. Yep, broken freewheel alright. So I removed the drivetrain, cleaned out the gearbox, rebuilt the freewheel with the early 6 roller setup, torqued the shaftnuts and now have a very quiet gearbox with working freewheel.
