The PO of my '71 Sonett did not say he had permanently locked out the freewheel, but he had removed the rod locked down the nylon lever with the screw in freewheel disengaged position. I drove it home 3 hours when I first bought it with no problems, but a few months later, I started having somewhat quirky issues like you have been describing. Soon none of the gears were working well so I assumed the it needed a new clutch and had that installed (new clutch, pressure plate, etc. from MSS so I did not have to deal with the incorrect rivet issue).
Never saw any metal of any significance when draining the transmission fluid, but I will keep an eye on this going forward. I guess this is why some people advocate doing a permanent lockout of the freewheel.
