engine-trans swap on 72 95

I want to swap out the v4 4 speed powertrain in my 72 95 and install a Mazda rotary hooked up to a Subaru 5 speed.
My reasoning is that my transmission is on its last legs. It still freewheels, but the pinion has been making noise for years and I don't think I can nurse it much longer. I rebuilt the engine a few years ago with a mild hop up, Hot cam, big valves, 2bbl webber, but I have hated that hunk of Ford pig iron for hundreds of thousands of miles, and the extra HP didn't change my opinion much.
I know not much will fit between the wheelwells, but a rotary will. I'll also take a bunch of weight off the front end, and I'll get a much higher redline (more like my two stroke friends),and best of all I'll have a Ford free zone under the hood.
I read about a guy who put a 13b turbo in a Subaru. and I figure I could attach the rotary to a 2wd Subaru 5 speed trans and put into my 95. I know I'll have to cut some metal to fit the shifter stub, but I need to deal with rusty floor boards(Chicago winters)anyway.
the only down side is that I'll lose the freewheeling (I'll miss the quiet coming down out of the mountians) and I'll lose the column shifter which I love. But I gain an extra gear.
If anyone has any tips or ideas I would be very grateful
