You'd have to go with a rotary engine, IMHO... Not gonna butcher anything that way. The rotary is actually narrower than the V4, but taller. It's about 50lbs lighter, but the Subaru 5-speed is a little heavier. In the end, it's all about the same.
The reason I ditched the idea of 4WD is the lack of a space for a driveshaft. The Sonett is simply too low to run anything underneath, and the cabin too small to run a driveshaft through. *Although* someone suggested using a torque tube instead of a driveshaft, and you *might* be able to slip it between the seats without making too much of an impact. Scary idea... Regardless, my '72 Sonett's floorpan is in great shape, and I'm not gonna slaughter it for a crazy project... :)
