I own two '80 saabs, the 99 and a 900 8vt. The 99 is an awesome car to drive. It handles really well and is a lot of fun to drive. The 900 is great for the family and road trips but I would always prefer my 99 for enjoyable driving. I drove it for daily five years before saving it for weekends and skiing trips. I don't want to wreck it because I know I would be hard pressed to come up with another one.
Justin covered the basics of the engine. Putting in the LH involves more work but is not too difficult with a diagram. Lots of people have done that when they change their 900 8v to a 16v. It just involves a lot of time. By the way, a friend has a 76 99 16vt pickup with power steering. He says that getting the power steering to fit and work took more time than building the pickup bed.
