I know that even a few LHD GLE's were made without power steering. My (ex)wife and I bought a new '79 900GLE in East Hartford, CT which had shipped with a manual steering rack. The '79 900GLE was a 5-door with all the options, including PS, except the Turbo related pieces. Ours included the sunroof, although I think the GLE was also available without it in '79. We drove a 900EMS with power steering and didn't like the road feel, so we bought this car that had been sitting on the dealer's lot for a while because nobody wanted it without the PS. It was apparently a US spec car except for the lack of PS and I have since seen 5-door specs without PS for Europe. At least in '79, Europeans weren't as likely to buy cars fitted with PS.
Quite frankly, I prefer most cars without PS. Why do people need PS on small cars?? I remember a neighbor who had a Vega with PS, and one night I ended up driving a Pinto with PS and the most anemic autotragic transmission I've ever experienced. A friend of mine has a '85 Golf GTI with manual steering and a '92 Golf GL with PS. We both much prefer the GTI. My '82 GMC 1-Ton Crew-cab was one of the few vehicles I've owned that needed PS and in fact the power brake boost was off of the PS pump rather than being a vaccuum assist.
I have a '75 99GL 4-door that needs a rack and am planning to fit the EMS/Turbo rack to it, if I can find one. I know that my buddy Dave trashed a '78 99EMS body a while back without removing the rack that I wanted. It was too much trouble for his impatient personality to deal with.
