...to a dealer and find someone local that knows Saabs. State your general location and ask for some good independant mechanics that know Saabs well and you will likely not have to shell out anywhere near 2 grand.
I just went through a painful fiasco with my 1997 900SE where the final bill was $3,145 Canadian ($2,301 US). Of course if I hadn't asked them for a special request (which added about $695 US) then it wouldn't have been as painful an experience.
Once you do get it done it will be amazingly light and smooth to engage, at least that's how mine is now. And mine had right around 67,000 miles (108,000 KM actually) on the odometer (COINCIDENCE!? I wonder.)
My last Saab's clutch lasted to about 130,488 miles and that's when I traded it in (hadn't changed it yet). The only thing I had to do with that car was change the cable when it snapped.
So in a nutshell, be careful. If you haven't changed your clutch cable, you probably should. If it's really hard to depress the clutch then it may be more likely to strain the cable and cause it to snap.
Regards,
Theo
