IMHO - Sounds like they want to make some extra cash on unneeded repairs.
I have almost 100k on my clutch. It has ALWAYS been stiff, typical for the cable-operated clutch.
I believe the true test is to drive steady at about 30mph in 3rd gear then floor it (road conditions permitting) while watching the tach and speedometer. A slipping clutch will cause the rpms to increase briefly with no significant increase in speed, especially as the turbo achieves full boost. If your car accelerates smoothly, the clutch is fine.
