Those of you with steering problems with 9-3's may find the following of interest:

PIP Technical Advice, issued by Ulrika Ek, 01/22/99: Technical advice SAAB 9-3, 9-5, car drifts to one side.

"Background. In connection with complaints regarding cars that drift to the left/right we wish you to fill in the following forms and fax them to TAKC Ulrika Ek when problems occur". There then follows a series of stements concenring the fact that all roads have camber, and that "It is often believed that a car pulls to one side if it drifts towards the ditch when the driver let go of the steering wheel. In most cases this behaviour is not caused by pulling but by a slight inclination of the raod towards the ditch - road camber (the curvature of the road surface)." The PIP continues: "If the driver let go of the steering wheel the lateral force needed to compensate the road camber will disappear and the car will start drifting towards the ditch. The steering wheel will also turn slightly in the direction of the drift. This is completely normal". The PIP then asks 1) has there been any chasis repairs; 2) are tire pressures as stated in the manual; 3)are the tires mounted correctly; 4)are there any chasis damages due to transportation.

I take this to mean that the excessive pull (not a drift!)reported by myself and others (15 degrees or more steering compensation appears to be the norm) with normal pressure, no chasis damage and a full alignment is actually quite normal. If, like me, you don't think that this is acceptable, the FAX number for Ulrika Ek is +46 520 780 70 (yes, this comes all the way from Sweden). Interestingly, SAAB have been aware of this problem since January 1999. How many of us have been fobbed off by the service departments saying that this is all in our imaginations. I would be happy to provide the full text (2 pages) by fax if anybody is interested.
