Hello,
We had the same problem when designing our performance systems as a reduction of exhaust velocity tends to allow for "backdraw" on deceleration. This is compounded when a larger diameter pipe is implemented (3", for instance, which is simply excessive for use on street applications).
We found the best combination to be a straight through mid muffler in tandem with a straight through back muffler. Even this allowed for some backdraw and we were forced into incorporating a resonated end tip for a complete elimination of this dilemma.
It may be worth while to try highly resonated tailpipe tips to your factory exhaust system. In many cases, we found these to be the "make or break" between backdraw and no backdraw on our custom systems.
Good luck and regards,
SWEDISH DYNAMICS
