Lots of folks here want the extra bennies with the SE, but I frankly
found some of the stuff (acc, power seats, wood dash inlay) to be
gimmicky for my taste and I didn't want them. My base 2001 came with
leather and sunroof, which seems pretty 'standard' around my part of the
country. I DID want the heated seats, and got those.
Frankly, I find the lower power engine adequate enough for what I do
in the car (mostly commuting) and the taller tires too. Replacing them
is easier and cheaper than the case with SE tires, and my dentist (who
has a '99 model) finds the fancier tires to be useless in the snow and
muck. Car runs fine on 87 unleaded too, even with reduced power.
As for the suspension, sure I'd like the SE setup better. But I can
upgrade the suspension later on, the way I want. As for the exterior
trim, I got a black car, so the trim matching wasn't an issue.
BTW, OnSTar is standard on the base models, too. As for the service
deal, you have the option of paying $750 up front to get the free
maintenance (does anybody really think it's not buried in the price of the
SE?), but I opted out of that too. Call me a cheap bastard, but I
BOUGHT (not leased) my car, and decided that for the price of a middling
Camry I could get a 9-3 and forego the potential headaches of the some
of the fancier options failing down the line.
Anyway, that's my take on the base models. They're pretty decent cars
in and of themselves, if you don't care about being judged by how many
doodads and geegaws your car has in it. But hell, I'm enough of a
non-conformist (even for Saab) that I would have been happy with roll
down windows!
