I took delivery of my SE (blue/tan/5-spd)about six weeks ago and I love mine so far. The dealer experience was exceptionally good too. I would highly recommend Saab of Santa Monica to anyone in LA or Orange counties.
This is my first Saab, so I spent the first few drives getting used to the "Saab-ness", but that was easy. The best way for me to describe it is that it drives friendly. It's always communicative and response. The engine serves up power by the ladle-full but it never hits you in the back of the head with it. Despite the long throws, it shifts quickly and it's easy to get the revs right. This is one happy car which makes me one happy driver.
You're right that there are significant differences between the Saab and German marques. VWs, Audis and BMWs I've dirven/owned are all very serious when going about their business. There's something slightly whimsical about the 9-3 that the Teutonic cars don't have. And I like it.
Sorry for getting so esoteric.
