I'd say the Saab is smoother (not "cushy" - that's for my dad's Seville STS). The VW's all feel too tight (jumpy over bumps). I like them a lot, and I was driving the wife's a ton, while I was waiting for my car's lease to run out. The TDI has plenty of get up and go - for a diesel. The 1.8T is nice, but it's not nearly the smoothness of the Saab, and also short power. The 1.8T is 150HP (jumps to 170 later this year - by effectively chipping it) - versus even the base 9-3 @ 185HP. Having driven a 1.8T Passat, GTI, and Jetta, there really is no comparison. The Saabs engine is quieter, smoother, and still has the "smack you back" factor that the 1.8T didn't seem to have for me. Then you have the VR6. Saab sold V-6s once. They don't anymore in the 9-3... The VR6 is amazing, if all you want is brute power (173, going to 193? as they also chip it this year). It's an amazing, smooth engine (I had a 1995 GTI VR6 - great car - NEEDED AWD!). If you think that Saabs have torque steer problems, then you need to drive a VR6.
At speed, the Saab stays quiet. The wife's car gets an annoying whistle (as have several others I've driven) at about 75 MPH... An interesting aside? I took a friend (with a '01 Jetta GLX) for a test flight today. He said there was no comparison - the 9-3 SE was much smoother, and felt tighter. But ironically, he also commented on the plastics...
