My wife drives the Jetta GLS (manual) and I have the 9^3SE (auto) (both are 99 models)
I have two major complaints with the Jetta. One, the side bolsters on the seat pinch my hips. I'm 6'1 and have a 36inch waist. No reason for them to be that tight since I'm not outside the 'typical' driver size range.
The other problem with that car is the noise at high speed. VW had to really shorten each gear ratio to give it decent pickup off the 115Horse motor. The result is that when you hit about 83 miles per hour, the engine breaks 4,000 RPMS and takes on a real screaming sound.
If you have a long trip and are hauling it, you can't have a conversation with the person next to you without raising your voice. Most unpleasant!
The Jetta does have a tighter turning radius because of the shorter wheelbase which is handy in the DC Metro area for parking. I think it also provides better visibility. Saab has some unnecessairly large blind spots for whatever reason. Rear legroom, trunk space, and aesthetics all go to Saab. That last point is debateable though.
I haven't been particularly impressed witht he Volks dealer in Tyson's Corner Virginia. VOB Saab in Bethesda, MD puts them to shame in service.
