All the great advice on this board has persuaded me to take the plunge into Saabworld (after initial apprehension regarding reliability).
I am currently negotiaiting to buy a 1999 9-3S red convertible. It is in very good shape, was a "program car" and has only 11,000 miles on the standard transmission. The salesman won't budge from his initial offer of $24,990 (even after 4 days) - does this seem like a good price? There aren't that many out there to compare against (I know, that doesn't work in my favor!)
A couple of other things:
1) We took the car for a test drive last Saturday (very enjoyable on Chicago's first warm day since October) but had some problems with the roof. It went up and down fine the first time, but then we had problems with the back part not going all the way down. I wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong, so when we returned to the dealership and went and tried to put it back up, it only went up half-way, then stopped and went back down. The very embarrassed salesman said he would have it checked out on Monday. He called on Monday and the service guys said it was the battery (sitting on the lot too long?) and that they had put a new one in. I am somewhat skeptical, but he assured me the service records showed no history of problems with the roof mechanics. It still has two years of full warranty, so might be willing to take a chance. Am I nuts? Could this be a lemon? Anyone out there having problems with their roofs?
2) I have read postings about how poor the OE tires are and was wondering what to do about them. I am not an overly aggressive driver, but I do like a bit of performance, don't want to feel every bump in Chicago's very rough roads, and want to be safe in the winter. Am I going to have to buy winter tires, or is there a good "all round" solution?
Thanks in advance.
