Last march in Detroit, Saab unveiled the new generation 9-3 to it's current dealers (myself included). It is the same size as the current 9-3 in regards to outside dimensions, but The wheel base is much wider and much longer. As most car buffs well know, with those pesky wheels out of the way, you gain a great deal of room for other things, like interior space. In addition, it will be a real sedan (with a wagon, convertible, and hatchback option)! The chassis is 30% stiffer than the current 9-5, and the handling and comfort is said to be nothing like Saab has ever seen!
It is absolutely gorgeous.
Dont be mistaken, it does not look like a 9-5. It is like nothing Saab has ever done before. It is a very aggressive looking automobile that, in my opinion, will seriously rival the BMW 3-series. Saab has definitely found a real contender for the global marketplace.
No engines have been confirmed, but the consensus is that more low-end torque, and much greater horsepower is certainly necessary. Also, all-wheel drive will most certainly be an option. If not in 2003, then certainly by 2004 or 2005. In fact, there are currently mule cars fitted with all-wheel drive that are being tested (not to mention the All-Wheel Drive Viggen that won Pike's Peak last year).
Everybody at Saab is extremely and proud (and if you've ever seen a Swede giggle, it's quite funny). The next few years prove to be very, very exciting. Saab is planning their own SUV, along with another crossover vehicle similar to the Subaru Forester. Saab's agenda is to introduce a new product, every year from 2003-2010. (Wow.)
Now I'm going to say something that might offend a lot of "old school Saab owners". We could not have achieved what we have without our Big brothers from G.M. They have given Saab's research and development team more money than they know what to do with. We've always had the engineering and the incite, but never the cash to blow on cool things like prototypes, concept cars, and factory sponsored race teams (needed steps to producing world class automobiles). Finally we have the funds to develop these cars in real life situations.
OH JOY!
Brian.
