My wife and I had a '96 Jetta. VW only offers 2 years of warranty, which is lame! At 30k miles a lot of things went wrong with that car, none of which were covered by warranty (brakes, sunroof motor, powerwindow cables, ignition switch). We sold that car in '99 with a lot of effort over a three month period after having sunk way too much money into fixing it.
I had a '95 Saab 900s with 65k miles that I sold in 2000. It took me all of one week to sell that car, with very little haggling. That car had no major problems, and any minor issues were easily covered under warranty.
We both have Saabs now, and it's hard to compare a Saab to a VW. The extra $8,000 that you would spend buys a lot more safety, security, and reliability. Performance is a matter of opinion too, but I think the Saab drives much better and is more refined than any VW (I've driven Saabs and the new VWs side by side, but you have to decide for yourself).
As far as financing goes, check out the lease with the $4,300 cap reduction. Calculate your monthly payments plus the residual, and you'll probably find that you get the car for near invoice. You just have to have enough discipline to save your money to cover that residual cost at the end of the lease.
