Did you mean $2-3k less list price? Or did you mean after accounting for factory incentives. I've heard of 9-3's going for more than $5k off sticker. Base 9-3 5 speeds for the less than $24k! And then there's the lease with a .02% equivalant a.p.r. (not a typo, two one-hundreths of a point) or 0% financing or....
And as for reliability, check out the latest issue of Consumer Reports Annual Auto Issue - April 2002, they say Saab has better forecasted reliability and better dealers, Saabs are the top European brand in complaints per 100 cars and more......
And I had a chance to drive a 328I trade in the other day (trade on a 9-3 convertible) and it felt heavy and numb, typical rear driver, the dash was plain BMW red lighting and very flat, not colorful and rich looking like the Saab panel, overall the car felt sluggish, but I suppose it's what you're used to....
