We just bought a 2000 base 9-3, auto transmission w/sport/winter modes, heated leather, 31k miles. The safety options, gadgets and especially the turbo are a huge improvement over an '88 900 I owned several years ago. I found our 9-3 on eBAY and the experience was really great throughout. We are very pleased with the car.
The sound system on the base 9-3 is inferior compared to the rest of the car overall. Unfortunately, ours has a cassette in-dash, and based on a whole bunch of factors (too many to list here), I strongly suggest you get one with a CD player in-dash already or plan on $500 to put it in the hatch.
The car has a firm ride, is responsive and is loaded with safety features. Given the depreciation factor, we saved at least $9K over a comparably equipped BMW that was a year older and had 25k more miles.
Best,
Greg
