Small footwell?

So, Friends...
I'm currrently driving a NG900, and driver's side footwell is a bit too small for comfort on my 2 hour (roundtrip) daily commute.
Someone on here asserted that the NG900 had generous foot room compared to the 9-3. So a few questions?
1. Is it really a problem?
2. Where do you squish your left foot when it's not busy?
3. I'm about to upgrade. Do I need to buy 9-5 to get a big enough footwell?
4. What are the compromises (other than $$) for buying 9-5 vs 9-3? (My 900 is nimble and, well, just fun.)
Thanks for your comments, and best regards,
Dave
