Hm. When driving "near the limit"--high speed corner, or in slippery conditions--I can't think of a reason why low-gear/high-rpm would provide better traction. My guess is that in those conditions a lower gear gets you up into the sweet area of the torque curve where throttle response--both on-throttle and off-throttle-- is immediate. This may give you more of a feeling of being in control; you're gut may be translating that as better traction.
I think it's the reason my wife and I both have always driven stick shift cars. As she explains it, she just feels more connected and in control, and I'm sure that's because when driving a stick you often have the rpm's higher whereas an automatic is always running in top gear unless you're accelerating.
