Maybe lugging has something to do with it too?
If it's stippery enough to spin even in the higher gear, then remember that in a lower gear the power is smoother. When the engine is lugging the maximum force at each power pulse is greater than the average force. The pulse is what breaks your traction, but the average is what you feel with your seat-of-the-pants dynamometer. This might be even more noticeable in the truck which can(?) operate at even lower rpm?
